Welcome to the Moosehead Lake Region !
The Moosehead Lake region has an abundance of deer, partridge/grouse, bear and migratory birds. We can provide you with a list of recommended hunting guides in the area. Please note: our 11,000-acre preserve is posted. Hunting ‘land’ permits are required here and are easily obtained at The Birches Resort Lodge. A Maine hunting license is also required, but cannot be obtained at the Lodge. Bird hunting season begins in October; deer hunting season begins in November.
The Birches Restaurant and Lounge are not open in November, but our cabins and privately-owned vacation homes can be rented year-round.

Hunters are always welcome to stay at Tomhegan Camps and although we are located in one of the prime small and large game hunting areas in Maine, please be aware that are also located in the middle of a Maine State Game Preserve. Loaded guns, hunting and dogs are prohibited on the grounds of Tomhegan.
Nonetheless, just a short walk or drive off the Preserve, Tomhegan offers easy access to many exciting opportunities for hunters. Our region teams with wildlife and affords hunters a vast amount of terrain in which to spend a few hours, a day, or a week. Some popular species of animals to hunt include partridge, rabbit, coyote, deer, bear, and moose.

It is said by veteran hunters that the Moosehead Region is one of the best hunting grounds. Large and inhabited forests provide excellent cover for deer, bear and small game. In every direction are hardwood ridges, one after another, small swamps of cedar and fir between. Old logging roads penetrating deep into the woods make excellent hunting.During the early fall hunting season, our meals are served family style with an early breakfast, lunch packed for the noon meal consisting of sandwiches, hot coffee, fruit and pastry and a hearty supper at night.
